As part of the State's support of the clean energy industry, Chelmsford participated in the Solarize Massachusetts program (Solarize Mass®) between April and October 2013. The program lowered costs for solar PV systems by offering residents a tiered pricing structure where the savings increase as more people sign contacts. Since it started as a pilot program in 2011, Solarize Mass has been responsible for more than 1,250 solar systems across the state with 9.4 megawatts of electricity capacity.
Chelmsford had 259 residents sign up for free assessments. After initial discussions and site visits, our installer SolarFlair delivered proposals to 107 of these homeowners, and 42 residents signed contracts to install solar electric systems on their homes. Installations completed during 2014 resulted in 230 kilowatts of new electric-generating capacity in town. More than 8,400 Massachusetts workers spend at least half of their time on solar activities in the Commonwealth, according to the 2013 Massachusetts Clean Energy Industry Report.
SolarFlair donated a 5 kilowatt PV system to The Paul Center in thanks for the support that Chelmsford and Carlisle residents demonstrated during our program. Overall the two towns contracted for 96 systems that provide over 610 kilowatts of new electric-generating capacity. What should residents do now that our Solarize program is over?
